Information about the Department

The Broughton Volunteer Fire Department Website

The Broughton Volunteer Fire Department has expanded services to keep pace with the growth of the Township. The department was founded and organized in 1926 starting with thirteen members. The department during this period of history provided fire protection for other municipalities as well, such as Baldwin Borough and Whitehall Borough. Presently, the Broughton Volunteer Fire Department has sixty-five members that include fire fighters, life members and honorary members.

When the department was first organized they had one small fire truck that was stored at Schevlin’s garage. In 1942, the department bought its first piece of property with a building, which was used to house the fire equipment and operate its weekly Thursday Bingo. This property was located at 6000 Brownsville Road. In 1970, the department had moved into their new spacious quarters at its current location which is at 1030 Cochrans Mill Road. Today, this building houses approximately two million dollars worth of fire equipment and apparatus. The apparatus includes: one Sutphen 70-foot aerial truck Sutphen, an International rescue/special services vehicle, one Ford hazardous materials vehicle and one Ford sedan, Fire Chief’s Command vehicle, and Personnel-Carrier.

The Department has taken delivery on a 2000 gallon per minute, Sutphen, pumper rescue truck. This type of specialized equipment ensures that the Township of South Park has a fire department second to none in the area.

The Broughton Volunteer Fire Department also has a Ladies Auxiliary that was established on January 30, 1940. The Ladies Auxiliary supports the purpose of the Broughton Volunteer Fire Department. Throughout the years, the Ladies Auxiliary has been an extremely important part of the fire department.

The main fund raising activity, which keeps the fire department fiscally sound, is the bingos that are held twice a week, every Monday and Thursday evening starting at 7:15 p.m.
