Frequently Asked Questions of the Library
South Park Township Library’s roots reach back to 1833 and the private library of John Moore, a resident of the area now called Library. Around that time, Mr. Moore began collecting money to expand his library and make it available to his neighbors. The library’s collection grew to 2,000 volumes. Residents of the area paid to use the library and the funds generated were used to purchase new books. This neighborhood group of library users formed the “Library Society”.
In 1960, the Windover Hills Woman’s Club founded the first public library in South Park. Housed in a building on the site of what is now Windover Hills United Methodist Church, the library charged adults $1.50 for membership, but children could receive library cards at no cost.
Almost 40 years later, the South Park Township Library no longer charges residents for its services. Housed in the lower level of the municipal building, the Library boasts a collection of over 40,000 items, including magazines, best-selling fiction and non-fiction books, books on CD, music CD’s and large print books. Thirteen (13) computers are available for public use, twelve (12) with Internet access. The Library has a new consumer education selection for the entrepreneur, the investor and all our patrons. Resources for children make up more than half the collection. The Children’s Room has a large collection of picture books, books for beginning readers and book and audio-visual collections.
The Library Board of Trustees, the advisory board directly responsible for Library policy, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building in the Municipal Complex. Meetings are open to the public and your input is always welcome.
The Library Staff Includes: Library Director, Sharon Bruni, Assistant Librarian: Mary Planiczki, Part-Time Technical Services Librarians: Jane McCullough and Blanche McManus, Clerk: Darla Dietz, Adult Activities Coordinator: Donna Nieport, four Part-time Pages: Karen Barkand, Carley Breletic, Jenna Schroyer and Shannon Tischler, Part-Time Computer Instructor: Jonathan Barkand, Part-time Clerks: Tamela Pauline and Nicole Clement.
The Friends of the South Park Library was founded on October 2, 1974. It is a volunteer organization whose primary objective is to stimulate interest in and use of the Library. The Friends sponsored book sales are the most popular of their activities. They also publish a newsletter, which is available at the Library. Membership in the Friends is open to anyone who values the Library.
